The Starlight Theatre in Kansas City is one of just three outdoor theaters of a similar kind in the United States. It attracts thousands of visitors each summer to various performances and also reaches out to the youth in the community. Several stars of the past have performed on this stage over the years. The Starlight is located in Swope Park which is also home to two other Kansas City staples: Lakeside Nature Center and the city zoo.

Starlight Theatre began operating in the 1950s, bringing Broadway musicals to the Kansas City public in droves. Since then, it has undergone many improvements to its 50+ year old audience and performer facilities. Today, several fountains grace the surrounding area. Up to six musical shows are produced here each year. Besides musicals, the theater also brings other musical acts to its stage.

There is a seating capacity of about 8,000 plus VIP space which includes buffet dining and special access passes. Scholarship and educational programs reach many young people every year. They host camps each summer for the youth. Several hundred free tickets are given out annually to non-profit groups.

Although the theater is an outdoor venue, there is an enclosed, climate controlled portion which is available for the public to rent. From 60 to 1,200 people can use the stage house and rehearsal rooms for private events. Visitors stay at hotels, camping/RV parks and B&B residences close by, and also take in the many sites and flavors of a Kansas City Summer. Shows go on -- rain or shine.
